Missing Shingles After Wind: Repair Or Replace?

What wind actually does

Losing shingles is the obvious part. The hidden part is the seal strip. Wind can break the glue line that holds each shingle down without taking the shingle away. Those shingles look fine from the driveway and lift with the next gust.

Signs it is just a repair

Wind damage is usually worst at an edge, a corner or one slope that catches the gust. When the rest of the roof is still flat, tight and flexible, a repair puts you back where you were before the storm.

Signs replacement makes more sense

The question is not how many shingles blew off. It is how much of the roof is still holding on. Once shingles are old enough to crack when they are lifted, every repair breaks a few more shingles around it, and the fixes start chasing each other across the roof.

Lifted or creased shingles on more than one slope.
Shingles are brittle and crack when lifted, which happens as they age.
Bare spots where the granules have worn away.
The color no longer matches anything available, so patches will stand out.

What to do first

Stay off the roof. A roof with loose shingles is slick and the loose pieces move under your feet. From the ground, pick up shingle pieces in the yard and keep them, because they show the age and type of what was up there.

Then check inside. Look at ceilings on the top floor and, if you can get into the attic safely, look for damp wood or daylight. Water that got in during the storm shows up inside within a day or two, and that changes the job from shingle work into shingle work plus drying out the wood.

Document it now

Photograph the roof from the ground on all sides, the shingles that landed in the yard, and the date. If you file a claim later, this is what supports it. Waiting a year makes it much harder to prove the storm did it.
