Roof Reclamation and Salvage

Good slate and tile are worth saving. We salvage, sort and reset original material instead of throwing it in a dumpster.

  • Slate and tile salvaged and sorted by hand
  • Reclaimed material matched to your roof
  • Reuse the sound slate, replace only the broken
  • Cheaper than all-new on the right house

Reclamation means saving a roof that still has good material in it. On slate, tile and cedar, a full tear-off is often the most expensive answer and not the right one.

Signs you may need this

  • Slate or tile pieces cracked, slipped or missing in spots
  • Cedar shakes curling or splitting in one area
  • Rusted or failed flashing on an otherwise sound roof
  • Somebody told you the whole roof has to come off
  • An older home where the roof material matters to the look

How the visit goes

  1. 1. Judge the material, not just the age

Slate and tile can outlive several shingle roofs. The question is whether the pieces are sound, not how old they are.

  2. 2. Check the flashing and the valleys

On old roofs, the metal usually fails long before the slate or tile does. Replacing metal can buy many years.

  3. 3. Count what has to be replaced

Cracked and slipped pieces get counted and matched. Salvaged and new material both get considered.

  4. 4. Give you both answers

What restoration would cover and what replacement would cover, so you can compare instead of being told there is only one option.

What changes the price

We do not post prices, because a roof nobody has looked at cannot be priced. These are the things that make the job bigger or smaller.

  • • How many pieces are broken or missing
  • • How hard your material is to match
  • • Amount of flashing, valley and ridge metal to replace
  • • Wood or batten condition underneath
  • • Access, height and how careful the work has to be

Questions homeowners ask

Is restoration cheaper than replacing?
Often, on slate and tile. Not always. The honest answer comes after somebody counts the damage, and you get both numbers.
Can broken slate be matched?
Sometimes with salvaged pieces, sometimes with new. Color and thickness are never a perfect match, and the roofer will show you samples.
Someone told me my slate roof is shot. Is it?
Maybe, and maybe the flashing is shot and the slate is fine. Those are very different jobs and very different prices.
Do you take on historic homes?
Specialty material work is handled by partner roofers who do that kind of roof. If your job is not a fit, you will be told instead of sold.

Straight talk: We do not name historic homes we have worked on. Any project shown as ours has to be confirmed with real photos first.

What to expect

Straight answers to the questions people ask before they book.

How soon can you come out?
For most inspections and estimates, within a few days. If water is coming into your house right now, call us — active leaks jump the line.
How long will the appointment take?
Plan on 45 minutes to an hour. We walk the roof, check the attic when we can, take photos, and sit down with you to go over what we found and the written price.
Do I need to be home?
Yes, plan to be there. Sometimes we need to get into the house or the attic to find the real source of a leak. Being home also means you hear the findings straight from us instead of a phone call later.
What if it rains on my job day?
We don't tear off a roof when there's a real chance of rain. We follow a rain-percentage rule: if the forecast shows a meaningful chance of rain during the day, we push the tear-off to the next good day. Nobody races a storm with a tarp on your house.

Before we come out

Please be home, and clear a path to the attic door if you have one.

This is the list for a full roof install day. You do not need any of it for an inspection.

  • Let your neighbors know the day before — ladders and a dumpster are easier when they expect it.
  • Move cars out of the driveway and off the street in front of the house.
  • Keep pets inside, and please clean up the yard first.
  • Trim bushes and shrubs back from the sides of the house so the crew isn't standing in them.
  • Take down yard decorations, statues, solar lights and anything fragile near the walls.
  • Clear a path to the attic or crawlspace — we may need to check underneath the roof.
